The construction and installation for the new sports Dome in the Cape Breton Health and Recreation Complex is currently underway with plans to open to the public in early September. The new Dome will be a modern multi-sport dome structure complete with energy efficient lighting and a cabling system to withstand high winds and large snow loads to prevent tears and extend longevity.
The Dome first opened in 2010 and was a community staple that saw more than 8000 annual users including youth groups, seniors, CBU Athletics and Recreation programming, varsity soccer teams and more. The Dome collapsed as a result of a winter storm in 2010.
This new, modern dome structure will enable the community and the University to continue to host high-caliber competitions that generate economic impact for the region throughout the year. It will restore a key community asset for the sports organizations that rely on it for training and programming, and will be integral to the hosting of two upcoming national championship tournaments: the 2023 U Sports Men’s Soccer Nationals Championship (November 8-12, 2023) and the 2024 Toyota U17 Boys and Girls National Club Championships (October 2024).
