Stuart MacLeod

Cape Breton University is delighted to honour and recognize a true leader in the Nova Scotia business community whose success and accomplishments are only complimented by his commitment to seeing his community flourish through a culture of philanthropy, Mr. Stuart MacLeod.

Stuart MacLeod is the President and CEO of MacLeod Lorway Insurance which is headquartered in Sydney. In his early years, Mr. MacLeod spent time working in Calgary, Montreal and New Glasgow, before returning to Sydney in 1965 to work with his father in his insurance business. In 1966, he married Nonie Williams of Barney’s River and two years later took full ownership of his father’s company, Stuart MacLeod Limited, and immediately began growing the MacLeod family business legacy in Cape Breton and setting a course of success for the future.

MacLeod Lorway came to fruition when two family-run businesses, Stuart MacLeod Limited and C.R. Lorway and Son, joined forces to create the consolidated enterprise. Today, MacLeod Lorway has ten offices and over 80 employees across Nova Scotia.

The family-run business has seen great success over the last several decades in large part because MacLeod Lorway prides itself on encouraging and mentoring its employees to take on the company’s philanthropic spirit. Employees at all levels are involved in causes like the Boys and Girls Club, ‘Adopt a Family’ during the Holiday Season, as well as employee giving to the United Way through a payroll deduction program. MacLeod Lorway employees get one full day a year through the MacLeod Lorway Cares program to volunteer with their charity of choice, as well.  MacLeod Lorway is known throughout Nova Scotia for contributing sponsorship funds to many local events, teams and fundraisers.

Locally, MacLeod Lorway has supported big-name causes and charities like the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and its Cancer Centre, the Because You Care Cup, Race the Cape, the Frank Rudderham YMCA, Transition House, the African Orthodox Church, Savoy Theatre, Horizon Achievement Centre, Hospice Cape Breton. MacLeod Lorway has also supported Cape Breton University through multiple campaigns and fundraisers for scholarships, bursaries and endowments.

Mr. MacLeod is a founding member of the Cape Breton Eagles and served as the chairman for many years. He currently serves as a director of the organization.

It may be said that Stuart MacLeod runs his business and lives his life with a motto of personalized service and connection to the community. Since 1976, the MacLeod Lorway philosophy has revolved around a commitment to the community, and Mr. MacLeod, along with his wife Nonie, have let their actions speak louder than words. Stuart and Nonie have four children, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
