CBU Alert

CBU Alert Login

CBU Alert is CBU’s emergency mass notification system. This important feature is available to members of the CBU community by invitation only. All staff, faculty and students will be invited to create an account within the system via their CBU email address.

If you are a member of the CBU community and you have not received this invitation or have questions or concerns please contact security@cbu.ca

CBU Alert is able to deliver messages using some or all of the following channels:

  • The CBU web page
  • Broadcast email
  • SMS Messaging (text)
  • Phone Messaging
  • The campus open/close hotline (902-539-5300 option 9)
  • Public access computer screens (labs / library)

In the event of a campus closure:

CBU Alert will be the first official communication tool used.

Immediately following the CBU Alert, an internal email will be sent and social media messaging will be posted to CBU’s official Facebook and twitter accounts.

FAQs

Messages will be sent by CBU Security, CBU Emergency Management or the CBU Communications team, depending on the nature of the situation.

CBU Alert is used only to deliver urgent information to you, for example, a campus closure or evacuation. CBU Alert will be activated:

  • When full or partial campus closure is required, for example:
    • Cancellation due to severe weather
    • Electrical outages
    • A Residence issue such as a flood, requiring evacuation.
  • When a situation exists on campus that could impact personal safety such as a chemical spill, bomb threat or dangerous person.
  • When CBU Security or University administration determines there is an immediate threat to the University community by the presence of certain persons.

This is a subscriber-only feature that allows you to receive notifications even if you’re away from your computer or university phone. You must subscribe to receive emergency notifications by text messaging or voice messaging. You will receive an invitation to register for text and phone messaging from Campus Security.

Follow the directions and you will be guided step-by-step through the registration process. You can log back into the system anytime to make changes.

After the initial email from Campus Security, alerts sent will clearly appear as being sent from CBU Alert.

Here are some likely reasons:

  • Quick confirmation: At the end of the alert, you will be prompted to confirm receipt. Once CBU Alert receives confirmation, the system will not attempt to send the message to other points of contact.
  • Spam filters: Spam filters may block email messages from being delivered; to be sure check your junk mail, and please continue to monitor the CBU website and official social media accounts.
  • Network issues: Network congestion may also delay delivery. You may want to check with your mobile service or e-mail provider to ensure there are no issues with its network or software.

The system attempts to deliver messages according to the subscriber’s preferences. Because of technical limitations, however, text messages generally may be delivered with, or even prior to, a telephone contact, regardless of the chosen order.

The information provided will be used only for emergency notifications.

Yes, the University will test all emergency notification channels at least once each fall and spring semester. The University community will be informed when each test is scheduled.

You should expect to receive duplicate messages. For example, if you are in a computer lab, you can expect to see a notification on the PC, as well as those methods selected in your account. This redundancy is intentional to ensure important information reaches as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time.

Depending on the type of emergency, CBU may or may not send messages according to the preference ranking indicated in your account.

All students who are graduating or who otherwise will no longer be a CBU student are asked to unsubscribe to phone alerts. By unsubscribing, you will help the system deliver messages to those who truly need to receive information when messages are sent.

Accounts will be deactivated if a student has not registered for classes after any the ‘add / drop’ date in any semester.  Students can activate or reactivate their accounts upon registering for classes in any semester. Accounts will be immediately deactivated if it has been determined (after due process) that you have intentionally abused or harmed the system.

You will be notified when your subscription is deactivated. When you access Phone Alerts, you will be provided with the current status of your subscription.

To change your notification preferences at any time, log in to CBU Alert.  You can change the type of contact (text, phone, or non CBU e-mail) and notification preferences. To unsubscribe completely from receiving Phone Alerts, choose the “Unsubscribe from Alerts” link on the page. You cannot unsubscribe from alerts delivered to our CBU email address.

You are responsible for making all updates or changes to your contact information. CBU does not update your information from other sources.  It is especially important to change your contact information when you change cell phone carriers or if you change your phone number. CBU will not verify the accuracy of the data you enter. If you enter inaccurate contact data, the data will remain inaccurate until it is changed by you.

No. The contact data you provide will not be used to update any other CBU systems.
