Are you a student with a strong interest in research? Are you passionate about social, economic, and political issues? Do you want to hone skills in qualitative data analysis and coding? Our research lab is hiring a student research assistant for the summer 2025 season to work with qualitative data on a Nova Scotia affordable housing study.

Project Description:

The candidate will join a team of researchers conducting a study that is focused on understanding tenants’ experiences living in various types of affordable rental housing in Nova Scotia. Data was collected by interviewing tenants throughout 2024 and 2025.  

The successful candidate will work with, and directly report to, Dr. Catherine Leviten-Reid at Cape Breton University.  

Our ideal candidate: 

  • Third or fourth year undergraduate student or graduate student
  • Experience with qualitative research, or a strong aptitude to develop and hone research skills
  • Interest in the research topic
  • Excellent attention to detail skills
  • Excellent aptitude for organization; ability to maintain organization while working with large dataset
  • Confidence working with Microsoft Excel and with qualitative research software (such as Atlas.ti, NVivo, etc.)
  • Works well independently
  • Experience with longitudinal analysis considered a strong asset

Compensation: $24/hour, full-time at 35-hours per week, 4-month term during summer 2025.

Job Duties:

The Research Assistant will be primarily responsible for qualitative data analysis and coding on our Nova Scotia affordable housing study. This will include reviewing transcripts, sorting and categorizing data, and identifying themes (thematic analysis).

The Research Assistant will also have opportunities to contribute to other research duties as needed on an array of projects focused on affordable housing, including but not limited to: editing and verifying transcriptions, conducting literature reviews, or supporting manuscript writing. The candidate will also have opportunities for research training/professional development.

Research duties will take place in the CBU Community-University Housing Research Lab in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
