SPORT & RECREATION LEADER – BASKETBALL CAPE BRETON
Basketball Cape Breton is looking to build an enthusiastic core of staff to lead and support its 2025 Spring
and Summer programming, working together to grow the game of basketball on Cape Breton
Island-Unama’ki. These roles will provide students with the opportunity to give back to their community,
impact youth through sport, gain valuable work experience and access mentorship and training
opportunities to develop as leaders. While these positions run from May to August 2025, part-time or
hourly work may be available following the spring/summer term.

Position Title: Sport & Recreation Leader
Number of Positions Available: multiple
Hours: 35 hours/week – 14 weeks – combination of daytime, evening, and some weekend work required
Pay: $16/hour
Start Date: May 1, 2025
Job Location: This position will be primarily based at Cape Breton University (1250 Grand Lake Rd) and
will include work in the broader Cape Breton Island community with some requirement to work remotely
for program planning and administration.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
These exciting roles provide successful candidates with the opportunity to execute Basketball Cape
Breton spring and summer programs as a day-to-day program leader, working together to develop daily
activity plans and coordinating program schedules, communication with participants and key partners,
and promotion of a positive, inclusive sport environment across Basketball Cape Breton programming.
Candidates will also be responsible for engaging with communities to bring basketball and Wheelchair
Basketball programs to regions across the Island including engagement with rural, urban, and Indigenous
community leaders to drive meaningful basketball participation and reach traditionally underserved
communities. Candidates will be supported with mentorship and development opportunities and will
receive training through nationally recognized sport leadership programs with partners such as Canada
Basketball and Jumpstart.
RESPONSIBILITIES
● Work in a team to plan community events at Cape Breton University and in counties across Cape
Breton Island-Unama’ki (Richmond, Victoria, Inverness, Cape Breton) that will bring youth from
surrounding urban regions, rural communities, and Indigenous communities together for
introductory Basketball and Wheelchair Basketball programming, team building activities, and
skills clinics.
● Coordinate with community partners to reduce barriers to participation for youth from rural and
traditionally underrepresented communities including other youth-serving community
organizations to ensure youth have the opportunity to build skills and have a positive experience
in the sport of basketball.
● Coach on-court basketball sessions and lead youth engagement activities during summer
programs, creating an inclusive and positive environment for participants.
● Receive mentorship and implement best practices from partners at Canada Basketball,
Wheelchair Basketball Canada, and Basketball Nova Scotia to build and execute program plans
that develop age-appropriate basketball skills using Safe Sport.
● Use creativity and communication skills to make youth programs engaging, interactive, and fun.
● Assist with the coordination of logistics including registration and set-up/ tear-down of courts,
classrooms, and equipment, and lead Basketball Cape Breton’s presence at community events.
● Learn and implement key strategies for operating as a successful non-profit organization,
including community partnerships, digital literacy, responsible budgeting, communication with
stakeholders, fundraising, and consultation with a Board of Directors.
● Support the development and implementation of new programs to reach underserved youth on
Cape Breton Island, with a particular focus on programs for youth with disabilities, Indigenous
youth, and youth from rural and historically underrepresented communities.
● Evaluate programs to measure and report on program impact.
QUALIFICATIONS
● Knowledge of basketball fundamentals.
● Experience working with children and youth.
● Strong interpersonal skills and confidence working in a team environment.
● Previous leadership experience is considered an asset.
● Familiarity with digital communications platforms is considered an asset.
● Beginning or returning to full-time studies in a university/college program for Fall 2025 may be
considered an asset, in addition to the ability to receive university/college course credit for the
role.
