5 Reasons You Should Book a First-Year Advising Appointment [2 min read]

Booking a First-Year Advising Appointment is a highly recommended first step in your CBU journey. These appointments can be integral to your success as a student, because they provide you with individualized guidance and support to help you get the most out of your CBU experience. Student Development Officers will assist you in developing an academic plan that will guide you throughout your program, ensuring you stay on track to graduate. Academic Advising Appointments can be attended virtually or in-person at The Advising Centre, located in the Marvin Harvey Building

First-year Academic Advising Appointments are designed to help new students like you learn how to register for courses and manage your class schedule, while becoming familiar with the ins and outs of CBU. To get the most out of your appointment, here are five tips from our Student Development Officers:

  1. Come prepared! We highly recommend you review the Academic Timetable and start exploring your program before your appointment. Showing up prepared with a few courses you find interesting will help us develop a more personalized schedule, totally unique to you.
  2. Ask questions and make the appointment your own. Use this time to discuss your goals for your degree and chat about graduate school plans or future career goals. Let us learn more about you and what your passions are.
  3. Don’t forget to introduce yourself to our Peer Success Mentors. Ask questions and get answers from current students who know our campus and can share their experiences with you.
  4. Visit our campus! Walk the halls where your classes will be held, ask questions in different locations and say hi to our friendly staff and faculty members. If our recruitment team is available, request a tour.
  5. Sign up for our Start Smart! online learning module. Start Smart! is Cape Breton University’s online learning experience that provides new students with the opportunity to learn more about CBU before they begin their studies. It is completely free and contains a series of videos that feature current CBU students and alumni who give you insight on the ins and outs of CBU.

Your Student Success team can help you with all of this and so much more, so there’s no better way to set yourself up for success at CBU!
