In-Course Scholarships & Bursaries
The following awards are available for the 2024-2025 academic year. The number of awards, and their values, are subject to change in future years. JKC-registered students will be eligible for the award based on a minimum registration in 6 credits per Fall and Winter semester.
Martin Chernin & Hugh Tweedie Business Scholarship (1 x $5,000)
Must be registered full-time (30 credits) in the 2nd or 3rd year of the BBA degree program, and have an 85% average to date.
Magna International Scholarship for Excellence in Engineering Technology (1 x $5,000)
Must be a returning student registered full-time (30 credits) in the Bachelor of Engineering Technology program, and have completed at least one year of study. Must have an 80% average.
Steven D. Kavanagh Memorial Bursary (2 x $3,000)
Must be a 2nd or 3rd year student in the BBA program (minimum 18 credits in 2023-2023 Fall and Winter semesters). Must have passing grades in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Archie and Catherine MacPhee Memorial Bursary (14 x $1,500)
Must be registered full-time in any degree program. Must have passing grades in 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Manning McIntyre Memorial Bursary (4 x $1,500)
Must be registered any program. Preference will be given to sons and daughters of persons who were members of the labour movement (union members), or plan on pursuing a career in policing.
Dr. Cornelius Donovan Memorial Bursary (2 x $1,500)
One bursary for 2nd year full-time Nursing student, and one bursary for 3rd year full-time nursing student. Must have passing grades.
Hope Bursary (1 x $1,500)
Must be a mature student registered for a minimum of two courses per semester in BBA or BSc degree. Must be a permanent resident of CBRM, with a 70% average in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Canadian Federation of University Women — Cape Breton Branch Scholarship (1 x $1,500)
Must be a Canadian female student entering second year of Engineering Diploma with over 75% average in first year.
The Canadian Federation of University Women – Cape Breton Branch Bursary (1 x $1,500)
Must be a full-time Canadian student. Must be a mature student, and identify as female. Must have passing grades.
CBU Students’ Union – Family Bursary (1 x $1,500)
Must be registered full time in any program; must be supporting a child under 19.
CBUSU Community Involvement Bursary (1 x $1,300)
Must be registered in a minimum 18 credits in any degree program. Must demonstrate community involvement.
CBUSU – Arts & Social Sciences Bursary (1 x $1,300)
Must be registered in a full course load (30 credits) in the 2nd year or higher of their program; preference given to students in their final year. Must be registered in the School of Arts & Social Sciences.
CBUSU – Education and Health Bursary (1 x $1,300)
Must be registered in a full course load (30 credits) in the 2nd year or higher of their program; preference given to students in their final year. Must be registered in the School of Education & Health.
CBUSU – Science & Technology Bursary (1 x $1,300)
Must be registered in a full course load (30 credits) in the 2nd year or higher of their program; preference given to students in their final year. Must be registered in the School of Science & Technology.
CBUSU – Business Bursary (1 x $1,300)
Must be registered in a full course load (30 credits) in the 2nd year or higher of their program; preference given to students in their final year. Must be registered in the Shannon School of Business.
MacLeod Matheson Bursary (10 x $1,000)
Must be registered full-time in the BEng or BBA degree programs.
Fraser Scholarship (5 x $1,000)
Must be a current CBU student entering your 3rd or 4th year of any program, and have indicated an interest in teaching. Must have completed the previous year with a minimum 75% average in 18 credits.
Trans-Atlantic Preforms Ltd. Scholarship (5 x $1,000)
Must be registered full-time (30 credits) in the BET degree program, and have completed one year of the program with a 75% average.
Cape Breton Business Hall of Fame Scholarship (5 x $1,000)
Must be a returning BBA student, registered full-time (30 credits), and a graduate of a Cape Breton High School. (3 scholarships & 2 bursaries)
Mendel Chernin Memorial Award (3 x $1,000)
Must be a 2nd Year BBA Student with a 75% average in the previous year.
Honourable Mr. Justice George Yates Scholarship (3 x $1,000)
Must be a returning, full-time (30 credits) student majoring in the Legal Studies option of the BBA program, with a 75% average in the previous year.
Lauchie Gillis Memorial Award (2 x $1,000)
Must be a full-time (30 credits) student who has completed at least one Celtic Studies or Folklore course, with a 75% average overall.
Catherine A. Godwin Bursary (2 x $1,000)
Must be registered full-time or part-time in any degree or diploma program
Rita MacNeil Memorial Music Bursary (2 x $1,000)
Must be a 4th year BACS students majoring in Music, with a minimum 75% average in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters. Must be a resident of Cape Breton.
Mabel Bell Bursary (1 x $1,000)
Must be a female student registered full-time in any degree program, with a 75% average in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Wendy MacKenzie Memorial Bursary (1 x $1,000)
Must be enrolled in BSc, Major in Biology; BScN; or BHSc (Public Health) program. Must have a 75% average in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Michael & Evelyn Campbell Memorial Bursary (1 x $1,000)
Any degree; passing grades; current CBU student.
Robert & Anna MacAulay Memorial Bursary (1 x $1,000)
Full-time 1st or 2nd year BScN or full-time B.Eng in 2nd year. Born and reside in Cape Breton and is Canadian citizen. Must have Passing Grades.
Hospitality Endowment Fund In-Course Scholarship – 2nd Year (1 x $1,000)
Must be entering the 2nd year of BHTM program, have all passing grades in 1st year, and have completed 1 work term. Must be registered full-time (30 credits).
Hospitality Endowment Fund In-Course Scholarship – 3rd Year (1 x $1,000)
Must be entering 3rd year of BHTM program, have all passing grades to date, and have completed 1 work term. Must be registered full-time (30 credits).
CBU Faculty Association Bursary (8 x $750)
Eight (8) bursaries available to full-time students in any program.
Margaret Evelyn Burchell Bursary (4 x $750)
Must be a current CBU Student entering 3rd or 4th year of any program, with a minimum 75% average in 18 credits from the previous year. Two (2) scholarships for female students, and two (2) scholarships for male students are available.
Michael Manson General In-Course Scholarship (1 x $750)
Must be registered full-time (30 credits) in any degree program, and have an 80% average in the previous year.
Michael Manson SASS In-Course Scholarship (1 x $750)
Must be registered in a degree program in the School of Arts and Social Sciences as a full-time student (30 credits) with a minimum 80% average and no failures.
Thelma (White) Campbell Memorial Bursary (1 x $600)
Must be a second-year BScN student enrolled full-time. Preference will be given to a student who resides in Richmond County.
Danny Gallivan Memorial Bursary (20 x $500)
Must be registered full-time in any degree or diploma program. Must have passing grades in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Joan Harriss Scholarship (16 x $500)
Must be a returning student in the Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management degree program. The applicants with the highest averages will receive the awards.
C.W. MacDonald Memorial Bursary (8 x $500)
Must be registered in 18 credits over the 2023-2023 Fall and Winter semesters (3 courses per semester). Must not have full-time employment. Must have passing grades in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Coca Cola Scholarship (6 x $500)
Must be registered full-time (30 credits) in any degree or diploma program, and have a 75% average in the previous year.
CBU Students’ Union – David White Bursary (5 x $500)
Must be registered full-time or part-time in any degree or diploma program. Must have passing grades in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Sydney Kinsmen Bursary (5 x $500)
Must be a full-time student who has completed 2023 Fall with passing grades. Must be a graduate of Sydney Academy, and registered in any program.
Louis and Pearl Gaum Bursary (4 x $500)
Must be a full-time or part-time student registered in any program. Must be a graduate of Sydney Academy.
TD Canada Trust Bursary (4 x $500)
Must be registered full-time in any degree or diploma program. Must have 75% average in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Michael & Anna Kiech Memorial Bursary (4 x $500)
Must be a part-time student (less than 18 credits over 2023-2023 Fall and Winter) in any degree program. Must not be employed full-time, and must have 75% average in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
John & Selena Daly Scholarship (2 x $500)
Must be a current CBU degree student with an 80% average in the previous year.
Rev. Angus J. MacIsaac Memorial Scholarship (2 x $500)
Must be registered full-time or part-time in any degree or diploma program. Must have passing grades in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Newman Dubinsky Memorial Bursary (2 x $500)
Must be registered full-time or part-time in any degree or diploma program. Must have passing grades in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
RC & RT Oberoi Memorial Bursary (2 x $500)
Must be registered full-time, and majoring in Political Science. Must have a 75% average in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Chartwells Bursary (2 x $500)
Must be working for, or related to an employee of, Chartwells. Must have passing grades in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Carmen Young Memorial Scholarship (1 x $500)
Must be a full-time (30 credits) 2nd or 3rd year BScN student.
Alexander MacIsaac Memorial Scholarship (1 x $500)
Must be a male graduate of Sydney Academy, with a 75% average in the previous year.
Kay Malinowsky Bursary (1 x $500)
Must be registered full-time or part-time in any degree or diploma program. Must have passing grades in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Bernie V. Seward Memorial Bursary (1 x $500)
Must be a full-time BACS student in final year planning on pursuiing a career in law enforcement.
John & Thomas Henderson Memorial Bursary (1 x $500)
Must be a full-time second year student in any degree or diploma program, and a resident of the Donkin-Morien area. Must have passing grades.
Webb Vance Bursary (1 x $500)
Must be a full-time student in any degree or diploma program with passing grades in 2023 Fall. Preference will be given to dependants of Unifor members.
Jean MacFadgen Bursary (1 x $500)
Must be a full-time BACS student, and resident of Cape Breton. Must be a first-generation student committed to contributing to their home community.
CWL Antigonish Diocesan Bursary (1 x $500)
Must be a member of a parish in Diocese of Antigonish, and enrolled in any degree program. Must have passing grades in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Mary C. Hines Memorial Bursary (1 x $500)
Must be registered full-time or part-time in any degree or diploma program. Must have passing grades in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Ronald J. Somers Memorial Bursary (1 x $500)
Must be registered full-time or part-time in any degree or diploma program. Must have passing grades in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
Sydney Dobson Bursary (1 x $500)
Must be registered full-time in any degree or diploma program. Must have passing grades in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
The Irving Schwartz Bursary (1 x $500)
Must be registered full-time in any degree or diploma program. Must have 75% average in the 2023 Fall and 2024 Winter semesters.
CB Retired Nurses Interest Group Bursary (1 x $500)
Must be a 2nd year full-time BScN student who was born and raised in Cape Breton.
Darren Usher Memorial Bursary (1 x $500)
Full-time/Part-time student athlete in any degree or diploma program who has completed at least 1yr; must have passing grades.
