Microcredentials

Designed with Industry. Validated by CBU.

Coming Soon

CBU is developing a focused portfolio of microcredentials designed to respond to workforce, professional, and community needs. Microcredentials at CBU are short, assessment-based learning experiences that enable learners to demonstrate specific skills or competencies.  While industry and employer partners may inform skill identification and assessment expectations, all microcredentials are approved and quality-assured by Cape Breton University under established institutional processes and are issued as verifiable digital credentials.

CBU’s microcredential framework aligns with provincial standards and reflects national and international best practices.

What is a Microcredential?

A microcredential is a recognition of an assessed competency or skill earned through a short-duration or applied learning experience.

At Cape Breton University, microcredentials:

  • Focus on clearly defined and assessable learning outcomes
  • Address identified workforce, professional, or community needs
  • Are developed in collaboration with industry groups, sector councils, and employers who help identify relevant skills and inform assessment design
  • Complement traditional academic pathways by providing focused recognition of specific, emerging, or rapidly evolving competencies
  • Are smaller in scope than traditional certificates or degree programs
  • Are issued as verifiable digital credentials

Who Microcredentials Serve

Microcredentials provide structured, assessment-based recognition of specific skills without requiring enrollment in a full academic program. CBU microcredentials are intended for:

  • Working professionals seeking focused skill development
  • Employers interested in targeted workforce training
  • Individuals exploring new areas of competency
  • Community members pursuing lifelong learning
  • International partners seeking verified Canadian credentials

CBU’s Approach to Microcredentials

CBU’s approach to microcredentials is guided by three principles:

  • Academic Integrity
    • All microcredentials are governed through an institutional approval and quality assurance process. They are issued under delegated university authority.
  • Workforce and Community Alignment
    • Microcredentials are developed in response to identified labour market, professional, or community needs.
  • Clarity and Transparency
    • Learning outcomes, assessment methods, and scope are clearly defined. Where stacking or pathways are possible, they are explicitly designed and approved.

Requirements for Earning a Microcredential

Microcredentials are designed to help bridge the gap between broad academic preparation and the increasingly specialized or evolving skills sought in many professional contexts. Learners must demonstrate competency through appropriate assessment. Participation alone is not sufficient.

Credit for Microcredentials

Microcredentials at CBU may be credit-bearing or non-credit, depending on design and approval pathway. Recognition of academic credit is never automatic and is determined by the appropriate academic authority.

Extended Learning at CBU

Microcredentials are a core component of CBU’s Extended Learning ecosystem. Microcredentials complement CBU’s academic programs by offering targeted, skills-based learning opportunities that respond to emerging needs.

Extended Learning supports:

  • Professional and workforce development
  • Community-based education
  • Employer partnerships
  • International training initiatives
