On Tuesday, January 28, the Cape Breton University Athletics Department recognized its 44 Academic All-Canadians at the Annual Credit Union Academic All-Canadian Breakfast.
To be honoured as an Academic All-Canadian, a student-athlete must be a full-time CBU student who has maintained an 80 per cent average or better, while being a member of a U SPORTS varsity team(s) with at least one year of eligibility for that sport.
During the event, student-athletes and others in attendance heard opening remarks from CBU’s Director of Athletics and Recreation, John Ryan, special remarks from Interim Vice-President of Academics, Rod Nicholls, and Dave Mayers on behalf of the Local Credit Unions Managers Group, with guest speakers Mitchell Hanna on behalf of the Mayflower Dental Group and Hannah Smith on behalf of CBU Women’s Basketball.
“We strive to ensure all of our student-athletes excel in both academics and athletics while stressing the importance of applying what they have learned on the field and in the classroom to their careers and communities,” says John Ryan. “These fine young athletes exemplify the values of our athletic philosophy here at CBU and this past season we had 44 Academic All-Canadians that set a new mark for the University.”
Over the last number of years, local Credit Unions have continued to be involved in, and provide support for, CAPERS athletics in a variety of ways. Thanks to this partnership and their contributions, CBU has had the opportunity to publicly recognize student-athletes that have excelled outside their sport.
A sincere congratulations to all of the 2024 Academic All-Canadian award winners at CBU.
