As Cape Breton University heads into its 50th anniversary year, the CBU Capers have taken a nostalgic stride with the debut of their special-edition retro basketball jerseys. The retro jerseys were unveiled during the home games on Friday, January 5, where the CBU Capers faced off against Acadia Axewomen and Axemen at the Sullivan Field House.
These jerseys are more than just uniforms; they symbolize a bridge between eras, connecting the visual identity of first Atlantic University Sports (AUS) Championship teams to the modern uniforms current student-athletes proudly wear.
“Celebrating our 50th anniversary provides us the opportunity to look back and pay tribute to all the former student-athletes, coaches, support staff and administrators who have laid the outstanding foundation that we continue to build on today,” says John Ryan, Director of Athletics and Recreation.
The Dr. Carl “Bucky” Buchanan CAPERS Hall of Fame has played an integral role in bringing the retro uniforms to life. Designed with inspiration drawn from jerseys worn by the first AUS Championship teams, the retro jerseys pay homage to the roots of the University’s athletics program. The block-style font, Island logo and classic colours come together to echo the spirit of the teams throughout the decades.
“Thanks to the recent opening of the CAPERS Hall of Fame, we have examples and pictures of the jerseys that inspired the updated retro look,” says Matt Skinn, Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball Team. “We wanted to feature those design elements while also showing off our 50th-anniversary logo on the back above the numbers.” He says the athletes are excited to rep their new jerseys both at home and on the road.
The support from the Island community is what fuels the CBU Capers, and wearing these retro jerseys is both a reflection and celebration of that pride. “Wearing these uniforms provides us with the opportunity to thank our community for all the hard work they did in providing today’s student-athletes with the privilege to play for a great institution and represent Cape Breton Island and all of its citizens,” says Ryan.
Throughout 2024, spanning two half seasons, the Capers basketball teams will proudly wear these jerseys. Each game, win and jersey is a testament to the rich history and tradition the CBU Capers have built over the past 50 years. We invite the community to join in the festivities by attending games and cheering on the Capers in their retro jerseys.
