Cape Breton University to Host PLANS and IHIM Health Sciences Summer Camp

This summer, CBU will be hosting an African Nova Scotian & Indigenous Health Sciences Summer Camp led by PLANS – Promotion Leadership in Health for African Nova Scotians and IHIM – Indigenous Health in Medicine.
The three-day camp will take place July 22nd-25th at CBU, in partnership with NSCC. Junior high and high school students from Mi’kmaq and African Nova Scotian communities will learn about multiple health science pathways including paramedicine, public health, nursing and sport leadership.
Cultural activities will also be a focus of the camp, as the campers will travel to Membertou and learn about traditional Indigenous medicine practices. By encouraging hands-on learning and participation, PLANS and IHIM hopes campers will discover opportunities and feel encouraged to pursue a university education.
PLANS and IHIM are organizations that seek to increase representation of African and Indigenous Nova Scotians in health professions by providing knowledge and opportunities to young students. Each year, PLANS and IHIM deliver camps which offer participants an interactive opportunity to learn about health programs and career pathways. The camps take place at various post-secondary education institutions across Nova Scotia including CBU, NSCC, DAL and StFX.
