Exploring New Paths and Making the Most of It: Meet Atul Dogra

Pursuing higher education in another part of the world is difficult, and figuring out which country you want to spend the next chapter of your life in can be even more overwhelming. CBU alumni and current employee, Atul Dogra, knows exactly how that feels. “I remember searching for a university that could provide me with strong foundations and comprehensive support as both a student and newcomer to Canada,” says Atul. “I happened to stumble across CBU’s Instagram page and was immediately attracted to the natural beauty of the Island and the mix of cultures”

Atul, originally from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India, moved to Cape Breton to pursue a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Supply Chain Management. Despite quickly falling in love with the subject, the true highlight of Atul’s CBU journey was the opportunity to work at CBU through the work-study program as the Assistant Video Editor.

Starting in his student role in March of 2023, Atul continued his studies until graduating in May 2024 before transitioning into a full-time role as a Video Content Specialist at the University. “Transitioning from a student role to a full-time position has certainly brought a shift with added responsibilities, which I enjoy as it gives me a sense of purpose and belonging within the team,” says Atul. “CBU has a perfect blend of young and experienced individuals working together, providing the energy and motivation to keep moving forward and persevere.”

Atul’s transition was made very smooth thanks to the support and encouragement of those around him, and he attributes his success to their kindness and guidance. Though he’s learned so much already, Atul knows there is still much left to learn. “I never feel hesitant to ask questions, even if they seem silly, and whenever I make mistakes, I am met with patience and understanding,” he says. “Having no previous experience in this industry, the level of care and compassion I’ve received has allowed me to grow into this role much faster.”

Though his time with CBU continues, Atul admits he misses the friends he made during his time as a student. Some he remains in touch with, but others have since moved on to pursue the new career opportunities attending CBU has given them.

Thankfully, working at CBU means Atul gets to meet new people, create more memories and pursue additional opportunities. “Working at CBU has been life-changing and I absolutely love my job,” Atul says. “I get to attend events, interview people, collaborate with different departments and dive into the technical aspects of video production that I have come to love. But the best part about working at CBU is the culture of continuous learning and growth, which we all deeply value.”

Atul wanted to share his story in hopes that it would inspire others who may be considering a new chapter in life. “From my managers to my colleagues, everyone has been incredibly kind and understanding, accommodating me in every possible way which I am truly grateful for,” says Atul. “I have always found help whenever I needed it, and I truly believe that the Island and its people take care of me.”
