CBU Alumni and former CAPERS midfielder, Tamara Brown, has become the first CAPERS women’s soccer player to sign a professional contract. Tamara, who attended CBU from 2013-2018, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts has officially signed with the Mallbackens IF of the Elitettan Soccer League in Sweden.
Representatives from Mallbacken IF saw Tamara’s game tape while she was playing soccer in her home province of Ontario to keep up her strength on the field. A week later, she signed the contract. “I knew that I wanted to continue to play soccer at the professional level, but I didn’t know I would end up in Sweden,” says Tamara. “It’s great that I get to see the world and gain experience at a different level. I’m hoping this leads to further opportunities in my professional career.”
During her time on the CAPERS, Tamara helped lead the team to the 2017 U-Sport National Championship in Winnipeg, which she says was the highlight of her university career. “It was a great year for our team and we worked so hard to accomplish our goals,” says Tamara.
Coach Ness Timmons is not at all surprised to see his former player reach new heights in her soccer career, and recalls that the CAPERS system was adapted to ensure Tamara would always be near the action. “Tamara is an all around special person,” he says. “On the field she is extremely versatile and she is such a terrific team player.”
When looking back on her time at CBU, Tamara says she is thankful that she was given the opportunity to gain confidence in her abilities as a player. Her main goal for the upcoming year is to continue developing as a player and gaining experience on the field.
Her words of advice to fellow student-athletes are never to give up on a challenge. “Opportunities come from many different directions and everything is a learning experience,” says Tamara. “Be open to that.”
Congratulations Tamara, we can’t wait to cheer you on, even if it is from a distance!
