After working as a substitute teacher for nearly eight years alongside his work as a pastor, CBU student, Pernell Muise, was encouraged by colleagues to apply for the accelerated Bachelor of Education (BEd) program at CBU. “A principal and vice principal I had worked a lot for approached me, encouraging me to take the course because they recognized my passion for teaching and being in the school environment,” says Pernell. “With my previous experience, it provided a fast track into a more robust teaching profession and aligned well with my life plans.”
Now, with graduation around the corner, Pernell looks forward to putting his enhanced skills to work in the classroom.
Completed in just eight months, the accelerated BEd is fast-paced and intense according to Pernell, who says the support of his family, friends, coworkers, classmates and CBU employees helped him persevere during the more challenging times.
The course delivery was something new to Pernell, but it was a welcomed change as the program’s online-only method helped him balance course work with personal commitments to family, friends and his work. “I really appreciated the program’s flexibility and how kind and accommodating the staff were,” Pernell begins. “The ability to learn online was a great opportunity and I appreciated being able to manage my coursework while continuing to fulfil the other roles in my life.”
Pernell has already witnessed the benefits of the program, saying it has expanded his teaching toolkit and furthered his understanding of student needs. “This program has given me tools to enhance my classroom practice and take on more long-term teaching roles,” he says. “I’ve already put many of the practical lessons into action, from effective assessment methods to culturally responsive teaching strategies.”
Pernell says the program has profoundly shaped his approach to teaching and has significantly influenced his development as an educator. The lessons have equipped him with new strategies and techniques for effective classroom management and have deepened his understanding of how to create both an inclusive and engaging learning environment.
“Through exposure to such culturally aware education, differentiated instruction and advanced assessment methods, I’ve gained a more holistic view of student needs,” Pernell says. “The practical, hands-on experiences during the program have given me greater confidence in my abilities. I am so thankful I had the opportunity to complete this program.”
Congratulations to Pernell and the entire Fall 2024 graduating class!
