Shaping the Future Through Data Analysis: Meet Megha Mohan

Resigning from a stable position at one of the world’s largest IT companies, with a one-year old son to pursue higher education on the other side of the planet is no easy decision. But, this is exactly what recent Post-Baccalaureate program graduate, Megha Mohan, did when courageously taking a chance on herself at CBU.

Before leaving Kerala, India, in 2022, Megha tried her best to prepare for the cultural changes she would experience when arriving in Cape Breton. “There were certainly challenges at first, especially the weather and new social norms,” she begins. “However, Canadians are incredibly welcoming and friendly, which made the transition a lot easier. I’ve embraced the diversity and inclusiveness Canada is known for and it’s been wonderful to be part of such a multicultural environment.”

After settling into her new home, Megha was quickly immersed in CBU’s Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Business Analytics program. CBU’s blend of technological analysis and business strategy is the reason Megha chose to pursue the program. “The curriculum equips students with the critical skills necessary to accurately interpret data and make informed decisions, something I’m truly passionate about,” she says. “The comprehensive, hands-on approach to teaching was exactly what I was looking for. The program not only prepares me for the technical challenges of the industry but also shapes me into a well-rounded professional, confident that I can thrive in the industry.”

Between her intense studies and regular household responsibilities, Megha also had her son to think about. “It was hard to balance everything. I had to be very strategic with my time, often studying late into the night, but I believed in myself and kept pushing forward,” says Megha. “Despite the sleepless nights and constant challenges, I never lost sight of my goals and that’s what led to my internship as the Research and Data Analyst at CBU.”

Megha was thrilled after finding out she had secured the internship with CBU’s Business Intelligence team. It brought her a great sense of pride knowing everything was finally coming together and her hard work was paying off. This new direction in her journey confirmed she was on the right path and provided her with a new wave of motivation to continue pushing herself even further.

During Megha’s internship, she had the opportunity to conduct two surveys targeted at students from other provinces, designed to help CBU refine recruitment throughout Canada. But what Megha enjoyed most was working with a collaborative team of like-minded individuals and having the opportunity to apply the skills she learned in the classroom in a real-world setting.

“My time at CBU has been invaluable in preparing me for this internship. The courses in the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Business Analytics program that focused on data analysis, business intelligence and problem-solving equipped me with the technical skills and practical knowledge I needed to succeed,” says Megha. “CBU’s emphasis on hands-on learning has been instrumental in my development, alongside the support I received from my professors and peers who helped me stay focused and motivated.”

Following her time with CBU, Megha’s primary goal is to leverage everything she has learned in her program and during her internship to advance in her data analysis and business intelligence career. She aspires to work in industries that align with her passion, to continue learning and to make meaningful contributions wherever she goes.
