Cape Breton University wishes to extend its sincerest sympathy to Mavis Buchanan and the Buchanan children on the passing of their husband and father, the Honourable John MacLennan Buchanan.
Mr. Buchanan was a celebrated Cape Bretoner who served as the 20th Premier of the Province of Nova Scotia from 1978 to 1990.
“He was a true champion for Nova Scotia and the Island he called home,” expressed long-time friend and former political colleague, CBU President David C. Dingwall. “Without John’s determination and tenacity, events such as the 1987 Jeux Canada Games would not have been hosted in Sydney, NS.”
“I remember him fondly and think of his sharp mind, impeccable memory, and ability to connect with people as attributes, which made him a wonderful politician and perhaps, more importantly, an advocate for the people he served,” continued President Dingwall. “The country has lost a great man.”
