Federal Government Announces $17.1 million for Infrastructure

To the CBU Community,

Today, at an event held on campus, a federal investment of $17.1 million was announced through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF) to support two projects related to Cape Breton University.

I was pleased to be joined by MP Mike Kelloway, MP Jaime Battiste and CBRM Mayor, Cecil Clarke, who came together in support of these important initiatives. The $17.1 million investment will bolster the Tartan Downs project, supporting the installation of new water, sewer and stormwater needs to ensure the safe development of 145 housing units in the immediate future. Over the next five years, the site will become home to 600 new housing units.

In addition, the funding will assist a second project to support a new, sustainable and dependable drinking water supply for CBU’s growing campus. This project will also supply drinking water to the Tanglewood subdivision development, which will support upwards of 200 new housing units.

We are thrilled that the Government of Canada, through CHIF, recognizes the need to support community housing initiatives here in the CBRM and I applaud the Honourable Nate Erskine-Smith, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities for supporting Cape Breton in this manner.  Today’s investments are significant and bring us one step closer to making the Tartan Downs Housing Development a reality. This strategic investment in hydro-related infrastructure will greatly impact our community for generations to come.

I invite you to join me in thanking MP Kelloway, MP Battiste and Mayor Clarke, along with the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund. We look forward to continuing working together to address housing needs in the CBRM.

Sincerely,

David C. Dingwall
