To the CBU Community,
You have likely heard the exciting news that Sydney has been crowned the winners of Kraft Hockeyville 2022! The CBU Women’s Capers Hockey Team and the Cape Breton Blizzard Female Hockey Association pushed hard for this win, and it is a momentous accomplishment.
As a result, the Canada Games Complex will receive $250,000 toward arena upgrades and our community will host a live NHL pre-season game. But, most importantly, our community has joined together and demonstrated just how much support we have for young girls and women in hockey across Cape Breton Island. Because of your efforts, the Canada Games Complex will become the home for women’s hockey, giving prime ice time and a designated home arena to these well-deserving athletes.
I would like to take a moment to address the hard work and dedication of Steve Horne, Stephanie MacDougall and the entire Development and Alumni Department, Chris Bell and CBU student, Juwel Jacob, who represented CBU on the organizing committee and rallied for votes all month long. Thank you to Gail Jones and Chad Aucoin for their support in the graphics production and coordination efforts, and to Alanna MacQueen and Maureen Barrington for organizing the event that allowed us to celebrate together as our home town was announced as the successful rink. Those in the room know the energy was electric.
Thank you to all those who contributed to making this bid and campaign a success, and to anyone who spent their Friday and Saturday voting countless times for the Canada Games Complex. Together, our community has sparked real change when it comes to women and young girls having access to play the sport they love.
Thank you one and all,
David C. Dingwall
