Cape Breton University Welcomes Back Coach Fabian McKenzie

Cape Breton University is pleased to announce the return of long-time Head Coach, Fabian McKenzie, to the helm of the CAPERS Women’s Basketball Team for the 2025/26 season.

Coach McKenzie, who took a temporary leave last year, will resume his leadership duties as the CAPERS prepare for another exciting season of competition. With more than two decades of experience, McKenzie has built one of the most respected women’s basketball programs in the country, earning accolades for his dedication, coaching excellence and mentorship.

“Having Coach McKenzie back on the bench for this coming season is very exciting news for our athletics program,” says John Ryan, Director of Athletics and Recreation. “His knowledge, passion, leadership and deep connection to our student-athletes is unmatched. We’re also incredibly grateful to Coach Chris Rao, who stepped in during the 2024/25 season to lead the program with energy, integrity, professionalism and heart. He has left a lasting impression on our student-athletes and our basketball community.”

McKenzie has spent his career helping young athletes develop their talent both on and off the court. He has served as a coach with Canada Basketball, led the CAPERS to multiple AUS championships and has been recognized both as a National Coach of the Year and repeat AUS Coach of the Year.

CBU President, David Dingwall, says McKenzie’s return is a point of pride for the entire university. “Fabian McKenzie is not only an exceptional coach, but a builder of community, confidence and character,” says Dingwall. “We’re thrilled to have him return to lead the CAPERS and inspire a new generation of student-athletes. With the momentum of our athletics program and the support of the Cape Breton community, we’re looking forward to a strong season ahead.”

CBU thanks Chris Rao for his leadership and dedication as Coach throughout the past year and looks forward to seeing his continued success in the future. The CAPERS will return to the court this fall, as they continue to build on a legacy of excellence, resilience and team spirit.
