CBU and CBRM Sign MOU to Improve Community Transportation

Cape Breton University (CBU) and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to address student transit usage. The MOU formalizes a partnership that will see CBU and the CBRM work together to better understand the needs of students and to continue to improve service for both new and existing Cape Breton Transit customers throughout the CBRM.
“Access to transportation is a critical part of successful and satisfying student experience,” says David C. Dingwall, President of Cape Breton University. “We’re thrilled to be strengthening our partnership with the CBRM though this very important MOU and working directly with the CBRM to help make significant improvements for our students and the broader community.”
“Our partnership with CBU will further enhance our ability to improve service for all patrons of Cape Breton Transit,” says CBRM Mayor, Cecil Clarke. “We look forward to continuing to strengthen our relationship with CBU, working together to better this essential service for our community.”
“This MOU is going to impact students in a very positive way,” says Parteek (Gunny) Brar. “We know that it was getting harder for students to get to and from campus due to lack of access to public transportation. This partnership is certainly a step in the right direction, especially with the increasing number of students from CBU relying solely on the public transit system.”
As part of the MOU, a Sunday Service Pilot Program was recently launched to ensure weekend access to transportation. The Program will run until April 2019 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Other items to be addressed include the creation of a Transit Hub on the CBU campus and a review of current transit passes to ensure affordability for students and the broader community. Additionally, a CBU branded bus was recently added to the fleet for service during peak hours and on Sunday’s.
