Extended Hours for Nancy Dingwall Health and Counselling Centre and Cape Breton Newcomer Primary Care Clinic

Cape Breton University is excited to announce extended evening and weekend hours for the Nancy Dingwall Health and Counselling Centre, along with the Cape Breton Newcomer Primary Care Clinic.

Now open Monday-Saturday, the Nancy Dingwall Health and Counselling Centre is a collaborative health care centre with nurses (including a mental health nurse), physicians and counsellors, located on the Cape Breton University campus. It offers confidential health services to registered students, staff and faculty including access to doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, mental health nurses, counsellors, blood collection and STI testing.

The Cape Breton Newcomer Primary Care Clinic was formed through a partnership between Cape Breton University and Nova Scotia Health. Access to the clinic is available by referral only and is designed for residents of all ages who are new to Canada within the last five years, living in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and do not have a primary care provider (physician or nurse). The clinic provides timely access to safe, culturally sensitive care and is located within the Nancy Dingwall Centre.

“We spent the last couple of years building our collaborative care team,” says Judy Kelley, Director of Health and Counselling. “We are finally in a position where we have a full complement of staff to meet the needs of the campus community.”

Starting Monday, August 12, 2024, the new hours are as follows:

Monday to Thursday, 8:00am-8:30pm

Friday and Saturday, 8:30am-4:30pm

Expanded services are also being offered, including prenatal and postpartum care, orthopedic check-ups, dietician services, the sexual violence prevention and response team, a wider variety of mental health supports and more.

Cape Breton University is also happy to announce the hiring of a new, full-time Nurse Practitioner, new Nurse Practitioners and Physicians for after hour services, four new Clinical Therapists, an Orthopedic Specialist and a Dietician.

“We look forward to welcoming patients during evening and Saturday appointments,” says Kelley. “I am grateful to my team for their flexibility and dedication to the patients we serve, and I am very proud of the hard work they do every single day!
