The CAPERS Male Athlete of the Year Award was presented to soccer star Peter Schaale at the 45th annual Athletics Award Banquet this March. Schaale, who is finishing his third year of the Bachelor of Business Administration program at CBU, dominated the field this year representing the University with passion and drive.
“It was a real honour being named athlete of the year alongside Ciera Disipio and Hannah Brown,” says Peter. “However, it wouldn’t have been possible without my amazing teammates and coaches. In the end, soccer is a team sport and that’s what it all comes down to.”
Peter’s soccer career continues to grow; he recently signed a summer contract with the newest Canadian Premier League team, the Halifax Wanderers. In September, Peter plans to return to CBU for his fourth and final year, where he is eager to finish strong with the CAPERS.
“CBU Athletics is one big family,” says Peter. “Looking back on this year, I am truly proud of the culture we have built in the men’s soccer program and being part of that experience has taught me a lot.”
Originally from Germany, Peter says Cape Breton has become a second home, where he has developed a community of teammates and friends. Peter’s message to young athletes is to jump at the opportunity to become a CAPER. “We have a great athletic department, faculty and student body,” he says. “I doubt there are many universities out there as tight-knit as we are.”
Congratulations on your well-deserved award, Peter! Though it might sting a little to see you in blue, we can’t wait to watch you dominate as a Halifax Wanderer.
