Daniel Farrow

History has always fascinated Daniel Farrow. From the time he was a child, listening to stories from his grandparents, aunts, uncles and parents about their experiences and family tales, he was captivated. On the constant search for more, Daniel’s path led him to Cape Breton University, where he is about to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts, Honours in History.
Following in the footsteps of his older siblings, the Glace Bay native enrolled in Cape Breton University after his high school graduation and says looking back, it was absolutely the right choice.
“Studying at CBU has given me the chance to experience things I don’t believe I could have at a larger institution,” says Daniel. “I was able to do research work with a number of professors and participate in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Parks Canada and CBU.”
Outside of his studies, Daniel stayed busy on campus, being part of 13 productions at the Boardmore Playhouse, working for both the Beaton Institute and Parks Canada, as well as holding the title of President of the Theatre Society. “There’s always something exciting happening on campus,” says Daniel. “If you find something you’re interested in, there are countless opportunities to bring it to life at CBU.”
As graduation nears, Daniel has been reflecting on the things he’ll miss about CBU. His professors and fellow classmates, the Beaton and the Boardmore all make the list, but what he’ll miss most is difficult to put into words. “What I’ll miss most is the lack of CBU-ness that I will have from now on,” says Daniel. “This school is a great place to be. If you’re on campus enough to take in the odd quirks that make it so interesting and fun you gain a real appreciation for it. I’ll certainly miss that.”
Daniel advises all future students to make the most of their time at CBU, and take advantage of the countless supports on campus. “Going to university, or furthering your education in any way can be an intimidating thing to start,” says Daniel. “But CBU has great staff and faculty members who work tirelessly to make sure the students succeed.”
Despite all of his activities and happy memories, Daniel says the highlight of his time at CBU hasn’t happened yet. “That will be when I finally print out the finished copy of my thesis that I have been working on since September,” he says. After that, Daniel says he’s ready to fully enjoy graduation and the new and exciting experiences that come along with it.
Daniel has recently been awarded an SSHRC CGS Joseph-Armand Bombardier Master’s Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in public history at Western University and we are confident he is going to continue to make us proud.
